Lazaretto Creek Boat Ramp: Tybee Island & Savannah Launch Guide

The Lazaretto Creek Boat Ramp is a major public launch on U.S. Highway 80 between Savannah and Tybee Island. The facility is located on McQueen's Island, just east of the entrance to Fort Pulaski National Monument, and provides access to Lazaretto Creek and the surrounding coastal waters. The National Park Service and Georgia DNR both identify it as a developed public launch with a floating dock and fishing access. National Park Service

Water Access

Lazaretto Creek provides access to the surrounding marshes and coastal waterways near Tybee Island, Fort Pulaski and the Savannah River.

The National Park Service notes that Lazaretto Creek provides access to the South Channel of the Savannah River and Oyster Creek. Low and high tides can affect launching, and some areas of Oyster Creek become inaccessible at low tide. National Park Service

Important Local Restrictions

Because the ramp is associated with Fort Pulaski National Monument, there are some restrictions that don't apply at a typical county boat ramp.

Personal watercraft and airboats cannot be launched from the ramp within the national monument. Commercial launching or activity at the ramp and in Oyster Creek also requires a permit. National Park Service

The National Park Service also warns that the surrounding waterways are tidal and that strong currents and shallow areas can be present. National Park Service

Fishing Access

One of the notable features at Lazaretto Creek is the large public fishing pier beside the boat ramp. The pier and floating dock were improved through federal, state and local projects, with dock and handrail improvements completed in 2020. National Park Service
